Where to begin
The first thing you need to do is understand why you need to quit. Gather as many information as you can about quitting and learn from the experience of others. In time, you will find the motivation you need and discover an increasing desire to quit. This is a decision that has to be taken as fast as possible, because with each passing day you become more and more addicted. If you have friends that used to smoke and successfully quitted, then you will find out first hand that there’s no secret behind this.
The reasons behind your decision to quit
Make a list with all your reasons, which might include:
-You will be adding a few more years to your life.
- You will not be considered a risk factor for strokes or cancer.
- You will protect family members from the toxic effects of cigarette smoke, and you won’t have to change joovy strollers every couple of months because they smell just like your baby is the one that’s smoking.
- You will have more energy and you will love life more.
- You can save money for a pleasurable activity, as a vacation or a nice home asset.
Write down everything that happens when you quit
A quit smoking journal is a priceless instrument. If you have a journal where you note down all your reasons and desires, you will have a place to return when you feel like giving up. Use the journal to answer your own questions like:
How did smoking affected and influenced your life so far?
How can you change your life?
What can you do to change the home or work environment where everyone smokes?
What do you like about smoking?
What are the things you hate about cigarettes?
Are there persons that can help you quit?
What are the quitting benefits for you?
Think of a date you want to quit
The sooner, the better. If you delay the date and do not want to specify a clear day when you are going to quit you risk loosing your enthusiasm. Better think of a period that is not very stressful Plan a tight schedule for the first few days. the first few days are the hardest days, and people that do not have many things to do should find some or think of a time when they are very busy.
The first few days are different from person to person, some want to relax, others to do as many things as possible. Others just want to lay down. This is a decision that belongs to each one of us, but you’ll have to be ready to do whatever it takes to feel as comfortable as possible. Even sleeping for a long time can help. This is the only time when nicotine addiction will cause you severe symptoms. It’s only part of the long process you need to go through if you want to return to living a normal life. You will finally be able to quit smoking and experience total freedom, as you should’ve since…a long time.
